74 GDs, 2 cases filed over phone theft at Azhari's waz mahfil in Sylhet; 10 detained
Police said some people have also complained about gold jewellery theft in their GDs
At least 74 general diaries (GDs) and two cases have been filed over alleged mobile phone theft at Islamic scholar Mizanur Rahman Azhari's waz mahfil at MC College grounds in Sylhet city.
Confirming the matter, Sylhet Metropolitan Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said 10 people have been detained so far in connection with the theft.
Among the detainees, six are men and four are women.
Many more people are coming to the Shahparan Police Station to file GDs, the police official said.
An organisation named Anjumane Khedmate Quran organised a three-day waz mahfil at the MC College grounds on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Azhari delivered the closing speech on the last day (Saturday).
Attendees reported that Azhari had to conclude his speech earlier than scheduled due to disruptions caused by a section of the audience. He also expressed his frustration over the chaos through the mahfil microphone.
According to the organisers, mobile phone thefts occurred on all three days of the mahfil. However, the number of thefts increased significantly on the last day due to the large crowd during Azhari's speech.
The organisers said more than a hundred people complained about mobile phone theft on the last day.
Police said some people have also complained about gold jewellery theft in their GDs.
Alleging mobile theft, a person named Lutfur Rahman wrote on Facebook, "My Samsung Galaxy A-34 handset was stolen while I was going to Maulana Mizanur Rahman Azhari's waz."
Earlier this month, hundreds of attendees at Azhari's waz mahfil in Jashore reported thefts of mobile phones, gold jewelleries and other valuables, prompting over 350 general diary (GD) filings with the city's Kotwali Model Police Station.
