8 'pro-AL' lawyers sent to jail over attack on students during uprising
A Khulna court today (12 January) sent eight alleged pro-Awami League lawyers of the District Bar Association to jail in a case filed over an attack on students during the July-August mass uprising.
Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sharif Hossain Haider passed the order this afternoon, District Bar Association Member Secretary Nurul Hasan told The Business Standard.
The lawyers who have been sent to jail are Abdul Quddus, Al Amin, Sohel Parvez, Sumanta Kumar Biswas, Tamal Kanti Ghosh, Sheikh Shamim Ahmed, Saidur Rahman and Mehedi Hasan.
On 21 September, Khulna District Bar Association member Md Enam Hossain filed the case with Khulna Sadar Police Station against 28 people on charges of armed attack during a student protest in Khulna on 4 August.
On 3 December, 23 of the accused got six-week bail from the High Court.
Today, they surrendered at the Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court and applied for bail.
The judge granted bail to 15 of them and sent eight to jail, Nurul Hasan said.
The rest of the accused – District Bar Association's former president Md Saiful Islam, former general secretary Tariq Mahmud, District Awami League General Secretary Sujit Kumar Adhikari, Jubo League leaders Anisur Rahman and Jasmin Parveen – are absconding, he added.
