AL leader Fakhrul arrested from son’s wedding in Chattogram
According to Faisal, law enforcers had kept Fakhrul under surveillance upon receiving information about his presence at the event
Awami League leader Fakhrul Anwar was arrested during his son's wedding ceremony at a community centre in Chattogram last night (1 February).
Fakhrul is the younger brother of the former member of parliament from Fatikchhari late Rafiqul Anwar.
Fakhrul also held the positions of industry and commerce secretary of Chattogram North District Awami League in the past.
Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (North) Muhammad Faisal Ahmed confirmed the arrest, saying, "Fakhrul Anwar was taken into custody from the wedding venue yesterday around 11pm. A case against him is currently under investigation."
According to Faisal, law enforcers had kept Fakhrul under surveillance upon receiving information about his presence at the event.
The wedding, held at the Navy Convention Hall in the Tiger Pass area, saw the marriage of Fakhrul Anwar's son and the granddaughter of former Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Manjur Alam.
Eyewitnesses reported that around 9pm, a group of more than a hundred youths gathered outside the venue, chanting slogans such as, "My brother is in the grave, why is the murderer outside?"
They confronted Fakhrul Anwar and blocked his path.
Upon receiving information, police and security forces arrived at the scene and arrested the AL leader.
Despite rumors on social media that Bangladesh Tariqat Federation Chairman and former MP Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, along with former MP Khadijatul Anwar Soni, were present at the ceremony, eyewitnesses denied their attendance.
Khadijatul Anwar Soni, who is Fakhrul Anwar's niece, was not at the event, confirmed the deputy commissioner.
"We heard that she was there, but this information was incorrect," he said.
Many leaders and activists of the Chattogram North District Awami League attended the ceremony but reportedly left after the situation turned chaotic.
Former mayor Manjur Alam, who was initially present, also left the venue quickly after the incident.
