All MRP to be e-Passport within 5-yrs: Kamal tells JS

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan today said all the Machine Readable Passport (MRP) will gradually be turned into e-Passport within the next five years as it is internationally recognized travel document across the world.
"All the existing Machine Readable Passport (MRP) would be transformed into e-Passport in phases within next five years," he said while responding to a starred query made by Begum Shamsun Nahar of Women seat-13 in the House.
Bangladesh, the first country in South Asia and 119th country in the world, has launched risk-free safe e-Passport. But the MRP and e-Passport jointly would remain valid till the transformation take place, he added.
Three passport offices in the capital–divisional passport and visa office Dhaka, regional passport office Uttara and regional passport office, Jatrabari– have in advance launched the e-passport, Kamal told the parliament.
As part of launching the e-passport, he said, it will be launched gradually at all the divisional passport and visa offices and the regional passport offices within 18 months.
For the Bangladeshi applicants, he said the government has fixed Taka 3,500, 5,500 and 7,500 as normal, emergency and most emergency categories fees respectively for issuing 48-pages e-Passport for five-years while it will be at Taka 5,000, 7,000 and 9,000 for 10-year.
Besides 64-pages e-Passport will be available at Taka 5,500, 7,500 and 10,500 respectively for aforesaid three categories for five years while it will be available at Taka 7,000, 9,000 and 12,000 for issuing 10-year passports.
