Lynching of ex-BCL leader: Anti-Discrimination Student Movement dismisses JU coordinator Ahsan Labib
“Ahsan Labib is being relieved from the post of coordinator of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement due to his alleged involvement in the violence in Jahangirnagar University,” reads a statement
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has dismissed Ahsan Labib, a coordinator of the movement's Jahangirnagar University unit, from his post over his alleged involvement in beating former Chhatra League leader Shamim Mollah.
The movement's central coordinator for the university Arif Sohel confirmed the matter in an official statement posted on his Facebook account this evening (19 September).
"Ahsan Labib is being relieved from the post of coordinator of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement due to his alleged involvement in the violence in Jahangirnagar University," reads the statement.
His dismissal will stay effective till a proper investigation into the incident is complete, it added. "The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement calls for his exemplary punishment if he [Labib] is found guilty in the investigation."
Meanwhile, in a separate post on Facebook, Arif Sohel made a strong demand to ensure proper trial of all those accused of being involved in the lynching of Shamim after an investigation.
"I strongly demand that all accused, with or without organisational identities, including Chhatra Dal activist Syed Hossain Bhuiyan, Raju Ahmed, Rajan Hasan, Hamidullah Salman and MN Sohag, be brought under investigation and ensure proper trial," Arif wrote.
The JU administration has also issued a statement over the killing of Shamim.
"Shamim Mollah, a former Department of History student [39th batch] of the university's 2009-10 academic year, was beaten by a mob at the Prantik Gate of the campus on Wednesday. He later died while undergoing treatment at the Gonoshasthaya Hospital," reads the university's statement.
The university authorities also said Shamim was beaten at around 5:50pm. Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam and other proctorial team members reached the spot after being informed on the matter.
"Shamim was later rescued and kept in a room of the proctor's office for his safety. At that time the incident was reported to Ashulia Police Station. After some time, some persons forcibly took Shamim to the security office located next door [to the proctor's office] without informing the proctorial team," added the statement.
It also said the proctor took immediate action by locking the gate of the security office and removed the agitating mob.
"Later, some individuals broke the gate, entered the office and beat Shamim again. At around 7:30pm, the police arrived and said Shamim is accused in several cases filed with the police station. He was later handed over to the police ensuring his safety.
"At around 10:00pm, a police official called the university and informed that Shamim Mollah died while undergoing treatment at the local Gonoshasthaya Hospital."
