Awareness campaign on cleanliness

The Bangladesh Scouts and 'Dettol Harpic Porichchonno Bangladesh' carried out an awareness campaign at different areas of Dhaka city on Saturday October 5 to promote the need for cleanliness among the younger generation in order to have a healthy future. 

About six hundred teenagers from the Bangladesh Scouts participated in this awareness programme at five key locations of the capital.

Bangladesh Scouts have been carrying out an awareness campaign on personal hygiene and sanitation at 25 key streets and at 25 schools in the capital to raise awareness about hygiene and about mosquito-borne diseases. 

They have talked to around one lakh people, including students.

During the awareness campaign, Priyanka, a pedestrian at Kawran Bazar, said, "Such initiatives are really praiseworthy. I think such an awareness initiative would be effective in eliminating mosquito borne diseases. The government must also get involved in this. Dustbins should be placed along roads, and laws should be enacted for proper disposal of garbage."

Standing at Science lab roundabout, during the awareness program, a student named Khairul said, "Such initiatives should not be carried out only in Dhaka. This idea of cleanliness has to be spread across the country. Only then will there be awareness."

Standing at Malibagh Chowdhurypara during the awareness program Saima Rahman said, "Raising such awareness should be a continuous process. It cannot be stopped even for a while. It has to work in such a way that everyone becomes aware of it. For this reason, different organisations and all the people of the country should also raise awareness about hygiene." 

Mohammad Golam Mostofa, Director of Bangladesh Scouts in the awareness campaign said, " Bangladesh Scouts and, Dettol Harpic Porichchonno Bangladesh have been working together for the last one month to raise awareness, but other organisations need to weigh in too. Only then we can be successful across the country."

Md. Rakib Uddin, Coordinator of Dettol Harpic Porichchonno Bangladesh, in the awareness campaign said, "Dettol Harpic Porichchonno Bangladesh has been doing conscientious work on cleanliness for years, and the Bangladesh Scouts have been involved in this program. With their help, we are trying to promote the idea of cleanliness at several schools and areas in the capital. Let us all pledge to keep the country clean. People are also being made aware of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, and on the need to use of pedestrian bridges and zebra crossings so that people do not lose their lives prematurely out of a lack of awareness."

The campaign started on September 3, 2019, at the central Shaheed Minar, and was inaugurated by Md. Enamur Rahman, minister of state for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

Later, about 2000 people, including many scouts took oaths of cleanliness at Shahbagh intersection, Nilkhet intersection, Kakrail and at the TSC in Dhaka University. 

On September 4, a 'Cleanliness drive in Educational Institutions' campaign was organised at Azimpur Government Girls' School and College. A. M. Mozammel Haque, minister of Liberation War Affairs, inaugurated the programme. 

About 700 students at these educational institutions swore oaths of cleanliness for a healthy and clean Bangladesh. 

The first phase of the 'Porichchonnotar Ongikar' campaign was organised on September 12 at Motijheel Government Boys High School, Ideal Government Primary School, Ideal School and College and T&T High School. 

About 10,000 students took oaths of cleanliness there.
