Family's Italian dream dies with fire that killed all 5 members
Mubarak came to Dhaka 25 days ago to take his family to Italy
Syed Mubarak Hossain had his plans sorted out.
After two decades in Italy, where he had built a life and career, it was finally time to take his family there. Their flight was booked for 10 March.
On Thursday evening, Mubarak took his wife and three children to a restaurant on Bailey Road, probably to enjoy to the fullest the last few days in their beloved country.
But fate had other plans for Mubarak and his family.
Mubarak's dreams of taking his wife and children to Italy turned to ashes as all five members of the family perished in the fire that engulfed a building in Bailey Road Thursday night.
Mubarak, 50, his wife Swapna, 35, two daughters Syeda Kashfia, 15, and Syeda Noor, 12, and son Syed Abdullah, 7, all hailing from Shahbazpur village of Brahmanbaria's Sarail upazila, were among the 46 who fell victim to the fire.
Mubarak lived in Italy for the past 20 years, said his family members. He came to Dhaka 25 days ago to take his wife and children, who lived in Dhaka's Moghbazar area, with him.
Abdul Qayyum, the uncle of the deceased, said Mubarak decided to live permanently in Italy with his wife and children. His wife and children got Italian visas recently.
"Mubarak came to the country to take them to Italy," he added.
Prior to their departure for Italy, the family had planned to pay a visit to their village residence on Friday. However, they returned home one final time, all dead.
A wave of grief swept through the village on Friday as their lifeless bodies arrived at their Shahbazpur home around 3:15pm for burial, leaving relatives and loved ones mourning the loss. Mobarak's grieving mother Helena Begum fainted repeatedly.
