Bank accounts of former agriculture minister Razzaque, family frozen

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has ordered banks to freeze all accounts of former agriculture minister Abdur Razzque and his family members.
Among Razzaque's family members, the accounts of his wife Shirin Akhter Banu, sons Rewzwan Shahnewaz Sujit and Rezwan Shahriar Sumit, and daughter Farzana Akhter have been frozen.
The anti-money laundering agency has sent letters to all banks in this regard recently, asking the financial institutions to freeze the accounts for the next 30 working days.
The letter, seen by The Business Standard, also asks banks to freeze any accounts of companies owned by the said individuals.
A presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League since 2016, Razzaque is a longtime former lawmaker for the Tangail-1 constituency, covering Dhanbari and Madhupur upazilas.
He served the constituency as its lawmaker for 24 years since 2001. Prior to that he also served as the agricultural secretary of Bangladesh Awami League for many years.
In 2009, he was appointed minister of food and disaster management. Later, after the ministry was split in two in 2012, he continued as minister of food until 2013. Razzaque was also the head of the Election Manifesto sub-committee of Bangladesh Awami League for the 11th Bangladeshi general election in 2018.
He served as the agriculture minister from 2019 to 2024.
