BNP leader Hafiz Uddin exempted from charges in DSA case
"The previous government had filed this case against me to harass me," says the BNP Standing Committee member
A Barishal court has exempted BNP Standing Committee member Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed from the charges in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Judge Md Golam Faruq of the Barishal Cyber Tribunal passed the order this morning (18 November), confirmed court officials.
Afterwards, Hafiz said, "Today was the date set for framing charges in the case. I appeared on the scheduled day and applied for the exemption, which the court granted."
"The previous government had filed this case to harass me," he added.
"Any government, no matter how knowledgeable and competent the people in it, is weak without being elected. I hope the interim government will quickly implement the necessary electoral reforms and hold elections within a reasonable time," Hafiz further said.
During the 2018 Bangladesh elections, Faridul Haque, president of the Awami League unit of Bhola's Badarpur Union, filed the case against Hafiz and Md Babul Biswas, a BNP leader from Bhola's Lalmohan upazila.
Previously, Hafiz was elected as a member of the parliament from Bhola-3 constituency six times. He joined the BNP after getting elected as an independent MP in 1991.
The BNP's policymaking council made Hafiz a member of the party's Standing Committee in August this year.
