Form EC with non-partisan, competent individuals; 1yr enough to hold elections: BNP leader Hafiz
If laws need to be changed through ordinances, it can be done quickly. he says
The Election Commission should be composed of non-partisan and competent individuals, BNP Standing Committee member Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed urged the government today (15 October).
"We have always said the elections should be held within a reasonable time. Personally, I think one year is enough to hold an election," the BNP leader said at a discussion meeting titled "Public Expectations in Mass Uprising: Proposals for State Reform" organised by the Bangladesh Labour Party at the Jatiya Press Club.
"If laws need to be changed through ordinances, it can be done quickly," he added.
Hafiz further criticised the current government, saying, "This government was formed through the people's will, but as days go by, we are becoming increasingly disappointed.
"Professor Yunus' team selection was not right. Many of those he has taken with him have a lifelong desire to be in power. They may not be able to express it, but that's what it seems like," he said.
He also proposed that measures should be taken to prevent anyone from influencing votes with money.
Dr Mostafizur Rahman Iran, chairman of the Labour Party, presented a 23-point proposal for state reform at the meeting.
Key proposals include implementing a neutral caretaker government system, balancing the executive powers of the president, prime minister, and cabinet, preventing the same person from holding the posts of president, prime minister, and parliament member for more than two consecutive terms, and introducing a high-level legislative body composed of experts to manage the state.
