BSMMU’s first liver transplant patient dies of dengue
A team of 60 doctors conducted a surgery for 18 hours after Siratul’s mother donated him a portion of her liver
Siratul Islam, the first liver transplant patient of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), has died of dengue.
Professor Kanak Kanti Barua, vice-chancellor of BSMMU, confirmed this to The Business Standard on Sunday.
Being cured after a successful liver transplant surgery on June 24, Siratul returned home where he got infected with dengue, said the VC.

As his condition deteriorated, 20-year-old Siratul was brought back to BSMMU on August 12 where he died within hours, the VC added.

Professor Zulfiqur Rahman Khan, chairman of the department of Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplantation Surgery at BSMMU, led the team while India’s renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr Balachandra Menon and his team of doctors supported BSMMU for liver transplantation of Siratul.
