Police and other plaintiffs on Sunday filed at least 28 cases against some 832 named BNP leaders, including the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on charges of exploding cocktails to kill police and snatching law enforcers' weapons during the party's grand rally at Nayapaltan on Saturday.
BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury have also been accused in the cases, along with thousands of unnamed persons, filed with different police stations, according to case documents obtained by The Business Standard.
Fakhrul, Abbas and Khasru have also been accused, along with numerous others, in a case filed over the vandalism of chief justice's residence on Saturday.
DMP data shows that around 1,480 BNP, Jamaat activists have been arrested till 28 October night from 21 October.
Sub-inspector Mostafizur Rahman filed the case with Shahjahanpur Police Station in the capital, naming some 57 people, alongside around 700-800 unnamed, Deputy Commissioner DMP Motijheel Division Hayatul Islam Khan confirmed.
According to Shahjahanpur police station Officer-in-Charge Hasinur Rahman, more cases will be filed soon once the formalities are completed.
During Saturday's rallies of different political parties in the capital, Dhaka turned into a battlefield.
Two people, including a police constable, were killed in the ensuing violence.
BNP activists fought pitched battles with police and AL members from 11am to 6pm. A number of vehicles were torched, while the chief justice's residence was vandalised.
The incidents also left scores injured.
Speaking to the media, Shahjahanpur OC Hasinur said a lawsuit is being prepared on behalf of injured victims.
