Head-on train collision in Gazipur derails carriages, injures 3
Train services on the route resumed 2.5 hours after the accident
A head-on collision between a passenger train and an oil tanker train in Gazipur on Friday (3 May) caused the derailment of eight carriages and injured three, including the driver of the passenger train.
The accident occurred near the outer signal of the Joydebpur railway station in Gazipur at around 11am, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of Gazipur Fire Service.
As a result, five carriages, including the engine of the Tangail commuter train, and three carriages of the oil tanker train were derailed.
Train services on the route resumed two and a half hours after the accident, said Md Hanif Ali, station master of the Joydebpur rail station.
"The injured have been rescued and admitted to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital," said Abdullah Al Arefin.
He said the Tangail commuter train was heading towards Dhaka after stopping at Joydebpur station at 11am. After leaving the station and reaching the outer signal, the train collided head-on with an oil tanker train coming from the opposite direction.
Officials from the Gazipur District Administration, Metropolitan Police, and Fire Service reached the scene upon receiving the news.
"The accident occurred due to a wrong signal. The passenger train entered the oil tanker train's line, causing the collision," said Abul Fateh Mohammad Sofiqul Islam, deputy commissioner of Gazipur.
A three-member committee led by Additional District Magistrate Matiur Rahman has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit an investigation report within two days.
