Daughters of PK Halder’s cohort arrested
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two daughters of Pk Halder's former accomplice who was a director of the Peoples Leasing and Financial Services Ltd from the city's Bashundhara area on early Wednesday.
A press release issued by the RAB said the arrestees are – Sharmin Ahmed and Tania Ahmed, daughters of Khabir Uddin.
The RAB produced them in the court on Wednesday and submitted their passports to the High Court.
The HC has asked to submit the passports or NID of the rest of the family members of Khabir Uddin as a condition to release the two sisters, lawyer of the People's Leasing Misbahur Rahman told the media.
Besides, the HC has ordered to deposit 5% of the total loan within the next 30 days, he added.
In the release issued on Tuesday, RAB said Sharmin and Tania were accused of swindling Tk64 crore. Sharmin had taken a loan of Tk31 crore while Tania took Tk33 crore.
Both of them came to the country from Canada on 28 July to attend a family programme, the release said.
On tip off, the RAB arrested them while they were trying to flee the country.
The release said Khabir Uddin worked as a director of the Peoples Leasing and Finance Company from the beginning until 2010. He embezzled Tk200 crore by taking loans from the company in his own name and in the name of other family members.
Khabir Uddin was released from his post as per the direction of the Bangladesh Bank after he was accused of swindling money in an investigation by the central bank. He is now on bail.
On 7 March this year, the HC passed an order against the defaulters to appear before the court. On 19 April, the court issued arrest warrants as they violated the court order.
