Country’s 651st police station inaugurated in Cox’s Bazar’s Eidgaon area

With the goal of ensuring the security of 1.5 lakh people – and protecting the natural resources and products of five unions – the country's 651st police station has been inaugurated in greater Eidgaon – a hilly and coastal area of Cox's Bazar district.

Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the police station – comprising the Jalalabad, Islamabad, Eidgaon, Islampur, and Poukkhali unions – by unveiling a plaque at the Police Investigation Center building at Dulafakir Bazar in Tetultali, Islamabad.

The minister said, "Our aim is to prevent the clutches of drugs at any cost."

The newly-formed police station will beef up security in the area by playing a vital role in preventing drugs and terrorism, the minister said.

Cox's Bazar's local lawmaker Saimum Sarwer Kamol said in terms of geographical location, the greater Eidgaon area has been revered as a commercial area since ancient times.

He said the area is surrounded by hills in the East, salt fields and shrimp farms in the West and cropland in the North and South. It was difficult for the authorities of Sadar Police Station to maintain law and order of the area from such a distance. Locals often suffered while going to the Sadar area for legal help. Considering all these matters, and upholding the demand of local representatives and residents, Eidgaon Police Station was launched, taking administrative importance into account.

Eidgaon Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim said the police station has been launched with: one officer-in-charge, five sub-inspectors, five assistant sub-inspectors, 24 constables, one cook, and a cleaner.

The rest of the manpower will be hired gradually, said Abdul Halim quoting high-ups officials.

Some 1,48,50 people live under the newly-formed thana which is also home to: one college, 25 madrasas, 39 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, 166 mosques, 14 temples, 12 markets, 66 industrial factories, six hospitals and clinics, seven commercial institutions, 19 cyclone centres, nine banks and insurance companies, one launch terminal, two bus terminals, and many other institutions.

Eidgaon was declared a police station through the publishing of a gazette notification – following a decision made at a National Committee meeting on administrative reshuffling on 19 October, 2019.
