Appellate Division upholds bail for Bdnews chief editor
“Why are you wasting our time by bringing this appeal to the Appellate Division?” Justice Imman Ali said in a rebuke to the ACC lawyer
The Appellate Division upheld a High Court order that granted bail to Toufique Imrose Khalidi, editor-in-chief of bdnews24.com, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charge of acquiring wealth illegally.
A three-member virtual Appellate Division bench, led by Justice Muhammad Imman Ali, on Monday, rejected the ACC's appeal filed against the High Court's bail order.
"Why are you wasting our time by bringing this appeal to the Appellate Division?" Justice Imman Ali said in a rebuke to the ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan at the virtual hearing.
Khalidi was represented by Barrister Shafiq Ahmed and advocate Abdul Matin Khasru in court, while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC.
Earlier on August 26, a High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mostafizur Rahman granted eight weeks anticipatory bail to Khalidi in a case filed on charges of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.
On July 30, the ACC filed a case under section 26 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, accusing Khalidi of depositing Tk42 crore in four different banks. According to the case statement, he earned the money through a fraudulent process by creating fake documents.
Dhaka Senior Special Judge Imrul Kayes has fixed October 7 for the submission of the investigation report in the case.
