Court orders freezing bank account of Aramit Cement, owned by ex-minister Saifuzzaman
Judge Mujahidur Rahman of the court passed the order in response to a case filed by Bank Asia
The Chattogram Money Loan Court has ordered the freezing of the bank account of Aramit Cement, a company owned by former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury.
Judge Mujahidur Rahman of the court passed the order in response to a case filed by Bank Asia, seeking repayment of Tk14.63 crore.
Confirming the matter, Judge Rezaul Karim of the Money Loan Court said Bank Asia filed the case on 21 November against the management of Aramit Cement.
The defendants include former land minister and shareholder Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, his wife and company managing director Rukhmila Zaman, his cousin and director Warasuzzaman Chowdhury, chairman SM Alamgir Chowdhury, and directors Md Habib Ullah and Md Shafiqul Islam.
During the hearing, the plaintiff's lawyer stated that no property had been mortgaged as collateral for the loan, and alleged that the defendants left the country on 5 August following the political changeover.
Mentioning that the defendants were also accused of laundering significant amounts of money abroad, the lawyer argued that freezing the company's account at United Commercial Bank's Bahaddar Hat branch was necessary to secure repayment.
After reviewing the application, the court ordered freezing of the company's bank account.
