Ex-MP Safia Khatun sent to jail in Akram killing case

A Dhaka court has sent to jail Safia Khatun, a former Member of Parliament (MP) in the reserved seats for women from Chakaria-Pekua upazila of Cox's Bazar, in a case lodged over the murder of Akram Khan Rabbi in the capital's Pallabi area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abdul Wahab passed the order last evening, as police produced Safia, also a former central president of the Mohila Awami League, before the court and pleaded to keep her behind the bars till the end of probe in the case.

According to the case documents, Akram Khan Rabbi was killed on 19 July last when he was crossing the road in front of Mirpur-10 during a protest rally in support of the anti-discrimination student movement.
It was alleged that leaders and activists of various Awami League affiliated organizations opened fire on the protesters, injuring many, including Rabbi.
Doctors of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) declared him dead as he was taken to the hospital.
Akram's father Faruk Khan filed a murder case with Pallabi thana on 25 August 2024.
