Liberation ministry to face contempt of court for violating HC directive
A contempt of court petition has been filed with the High Court against the Liberation War ministry following a legal notice to stop the felling of trees at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka University.
Advocate Manzill Murshid has filed the petition, in which Secretary of the ministry Tapan Kanti Ghosh, Chief Engineer of Public Works Department Shamim Akhtar and Bangladesh's Chief of Architects Mir Manzur Rahman have been made respondents.
On 6 May, the three were issued a legal notice asking them to stop the felling of trees at Suhrawardy Udyan within 48 hours.

The notice said the HC had issued several directives for the protection of the park in 2009.
The court back then said Ramna or Suhrawardy Udyan was not just any other area. It is famous for its historical legacy and environmental importance.
"This area is the centre of all democratic freedom movements in Bangladesh to date." Considering these aspects, the whole area should be preserved, the HC said.
Referring to the 2009 HC directive, the notice said that ignoring it, many trees had been cut down inside the park to build restaurants or shops, which was contradictory to the HC directive and amounted to a contempt of court.
The contempt of court petition was filed on Saturday as the construction work continued even after the notice had been sent, the lawyer said.
