Regular bench to hear war criminal Azharul’s review appeal

Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam's review plea seeking acquittal from the death penalty will be presented before a regular bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
The Appellate Division has directed to present the review application for hearing after the regular court proceedings restart.
The directive came on Monday when the matter was presented for hearing before the virtual appeal bench of Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.

The review application was presented by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
On July 19, Azharul Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami's assistant secretary general, filed a review petition seeking acquittal from the death penalty in a case over crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Azharul's Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir submitted the application to the Appellate Division.
Shishir Monir said the 23-page review petition showed 14 arguments for the acquittal.
On October 31 last year, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of Azharul for his crimes against humanity.
On March 25, the Appellate Division published the full verdict upholding the death sentence.
The accused in crimes against humanity cases get 15 days to seek a review after the verdict is published.
But Azharul's review got stuck as the regular court proceedings were closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced him to death on December 30, 2014.
