RMG worker killing: Shakil, Rupa placed on fresh 5-day remand, AL leader Golap gets 7 days
A Dhaka court has placed Shakil Ahmed, former chief news editor of Ekattor TV, and his wife, Farzana Rupa, former chief reporter and anchor for the same channel, on a fresh five-day remand in connection with a murder case filed over the death of a readymade garment worker.
Besides, Awami League's central publicity and publications secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, who was arrested in the same case yesterday, has been placed on a seven-day remand.
The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court gave the order today (26 August) after the accused were produced in the court in the case filed with the Adabor Police Station over the killing of Rubel, an RMG worker in Mohammadpur during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Golap, who was detained from Nakhalpara yesterday and later arrested in the Rubel murder case, was produced in court today.
The journalist couple Shakil-Rupa was produced in court today after the end of their four-day remand in a separate murder case filed over the killing of Fazlul Karim, another garment worker. They were earlier arrested in this case.
The police sought a 10-day remand for all three individuals in their custody for further investigation into Rubel's murder.
After hearing both sides, the court granted five days of remand to Shakil and Rupa and seven days to Golap.
Earlier on 21 August, Shakil and Rupa, along with their child, were detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to leave the country for Paris via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines flight TK-713.
They were placed on remand following their alleged involvement in inciting the government to suppress the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement with a heavy hand.
