Joint forces have arrested Kabirul Islam Shikdar, a leader of Cumilla Metropolitan Awami League and former president of Cumilla District Chhatra League, who is accused in at least four cases.
Army officials handed over Kabirul, who is commonly known as Kabir Shikdar, to the Kotwali model police station early today (17 January), confirmed the station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahinul Islam.
Late last night (16 January), joint forces took Kabir, the education and human resources secretary of AL's Cumilla metropolitan unit, into custody during a raid at his home in the Mogoltuli area under Ward 5 of the city.
OC Mahinul further informed Kabir will be produced before the court this afternoon in the cases against him and subsequently sent to prison.
According to joint force sources, Kabir played an active role against the student protests during the July-August uprising last year. Recent intelligence reports suggest he was attempting to reorganise the local Awami League supporters.
Additionally, he was reportedly playing an active role in ensuring the success of the Awami League's planned nationwide hartal on 18 January.
