Tufan sentenced to 13 years in prison over acquiring wealth illegally
Bogura Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad said the case was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act
A Bogura court today (27 November) sentenced Tufan Sarkar, an expelled convener of District Sramik League, to 13 years in prison in a case over acquiring wealth illegally and concealing information.
Judge Mohammad Shahidullah of Bogura's Special Judge's Court handed over the verdict.
Bogura Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad said the case was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
"Tufan was sentenced in two sections of the act. He got three years' imprisonment under section 26(2) and 10 years under section 27(1). He has also been fined Tk10,000, and failure to pay will extend his sentence by six more months."
Tufan is currently a fugitive. The verdict will be effective from the date of his arrest, said the prosecutor.
Besides, the court seized Tufan's assets worth Tk1.6 crore.
Allegations of acquiring illegal wealth against Tufan surfaced in 2017. The Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against him at the Bogura Sadar Police Station on 31 December 2018. According to the case, he amassed around Tk1.59 crore illegally.
