Why 40% dependent quota in railway jobs not cancelled: HC
It directed secretaries of railway and law ministries to respond to the rule within four weeks
The High Court has issued a ruling, asking the government to explain why the 40% dependent quota provision for recruitment in Bangladesh Railways should not be cancelled.
The HC bench, comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain, issued the rule today (14 July) after hearing a writ petition filed by Advocate Md Rokonuzzaman.
The court has directed the secretaries of the railway ministry and law ministry to respond to the rule within four weeks.
On 26 May, advocate Md Rokonuzzaman filed the petition, challenging the legality of the quota system for Bangladesh Railways jobs and demanding its abolishment.
The petition argued that objectively, Bangladesh Railways has formulated regulations, prescribing a 40% quota for the children of existing employees. This quota is discriminatory and violates the Public Administration Ministry's 2018 circular on quota cancellation as well as constitutional provisions.
In the petition, Rokonuzzaman prayed to issue a rule on keeping the 40% dependent quota in recruitment in Bangladesh Railways.
He said, "40% quota for the children of public servants is discriminatory and violates the constitution."
Expressing concern, lawyer Rokonuzzaman said the practice unfairly disadvantages a significant portion of the population.
