733 grams of gold ornaments worth Tk68 lakh seized at Ctg airport
Authorities at the Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport have seized 733 grams of gold ornaments worth around Tk68 lakh from two passengers, including actress Anamika Juthi, who arrived on a flight from Dubai.
The gold was recovered by the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department after boarding Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-148 at 9:50am on Saturday (7 December).
The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus) estimated the value of the seized gold at Tk68,96,462.
Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, public relations officer of Chattogram airport said the gold ornaments — comprising bangles, chains, and white gold chains — were found with passengers Anamika Juthi, a resident of Mirpur, and Mohammad Raihan Iqbal of Raujan, Chattogram.
Juthi had gold bangles taped to her hands, and they had the chains around their necks. Additional ornaments were found in their handbags, Khalil added.
The passengers had flown into Chattogram on flight BG-148, which operates on the Dubai-Chattogram-Dhaka route. Since their final destination was Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, aviation regulations required they be sent onward to Dhaka on the same flight.
Upon arrival in Dhaka, they were handed over to authorities by NSI and customs officials for further investigation.
Airport sources revealed that both passengers are frequent travelers to the Middle East.
