BCL leader arrested over attack on DU students during July protests
Sajibur Rahman is scheduled to be presented before a court today
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Sajibur Rahman, the organisational secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in a case filed over an attack on students during the quota reform movement at Dhaka University (DU) in July last year.
He was apprehended last night (3 January) in the case filed at Shahbagh police station, confirmed DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, reports Prothom Alo.
He said that Sajibur, who is also the president of the BCL unit at DU's Bijoy Ekattor Hall, would be presented before a court today (4 January).
According to case details, on 15 July 2024, BCL activists attacked students during protests against the reinstatement of the quota system in government jobs following clashes in front of Bijoy Ekattor Hall.
Many students, including female participants, were physically assaulted during the attack.
Back in October, the interim government had banned Chhatra League, the student wing of Awami League, as a terrorist organisation – citing various reasons including murder, torture, common room-based oppression, seat trading in dormitories, tender bidding, rape and sexual harassment during various times in the post-independence of Bangladesh, especially during the last 15 years of dictatorial rule.
