Capital punishment demanded for culprits involved in Lalmonhirhat mob lynching
Jewel had been going through mental disorders for the last few days, said his classmate at a human chain on Monday
Former classmates and college mates of Md Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was beaten to death and later burned down in Lalmonirhat for alleged contempt of holy Quran, demanded capital punishment to those involved in the brutal incident.
The Carmichael College Alumni Association formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club today, protesting Jewel's murder on 29 October in the district's Burimari area. Jewel studied in the college in Rangpur.
Terming the murder very shocking, Rakibus Sultan, general secretary of the association, said Jewel had been going through mental disorders for the last few days. As a result, he lost his post as a librarian in Rangpur Public School and College.
Jewel studied in Rangpur Zilla School, Carmichael College and Dhaka University. He was honest and religious from his early ages, Rakibus also said.
The barbaric torture on him cannot be tolerated, said the former students' leader demanding the perpetrators' capital punishment based on an investigation into the incident.
Among others, the association's treasurer Advocate Ziaur Rahman, organising secretary Dollar Abedin, social welfare secretary Romel AM Kabir and publication secretary Mizanur Raham spoke at the rally.
