Girl who 'eloped' from Cumilla gang-raped in Ctg; 1 arrested
A 24-year-old girl, who had reportedly eloped from Cumilla, was allegedly gang-raped in Chattogram last night (23 September).
In this connection, police arrested Abul Kalam, 28, who is reportedly a thief.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulshi Police Station Mohammad Mujibur Rahman said operations are underway to nab the rest. A case is also pending over the incident.
Contacted, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North Zone) Faisal Ahmed told The Business Standard there was a delay in filing the case as they were waiting for the arrival of the victim's guardian.
The police official added that she would then be admitted to the one-stop crisis centre of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
According to locals, the girl had eloped from Cumilla with her partner. When they reached Chattogram, a group of unidentified men lured them into an abandoned building in the Khulshi Police Station area.
The men tied up her partner and gang-raped her.
Local students were tipped off and they rescued the girl and handed over Abul Kalam to the police.
A student Tanveer Khan Pathan, who was among the rescuers, told TBS, "The couple who eloped from Cumilla were robbed after getting off the train at the Pahartali Railway Station. Then they came to the Khulshi area and fell into the trap of a group of thieves. After hearing their story, they offered them shelter at an abandoned house in Khulshi. After taking her to the building, they locked her boyfriend in a room and raped her."
"After we got to know, we rescued the couple and after hearing the description of the criminal from them, we nabbed a thief named Abul Kalam in the area. Later, the couple identified Kalam. We then handed him over to the police."
