New Year’s eve: 999 gets over a thousand calls with noise pollution complaints
Over a thousand citizens dialled the national emergency helpline 999 yesterday (31 December) on New Year's eve with noise pollution complaints.
Just as the celebrations began yesterday, a total of 1,185 calls were received on 999 regarding noise from loud music, fireworks, and other sources, said a press release today, signed by Police Inspector Anwar Sattar, media and public relations officer of the helpline.
Of these, 387 calls came from Dhaka, while 798 calls were from other parts of the country.
In each case, the 999 service informed the relevant police stations and efforts were made to address the issue, reads the release.
A lantern caught fire in front of the Swapna Shopping Mall near LabAid in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area.
However, upon receiving the news, a firefighting team from the Mohammadpur Fire Station was dispatched.
By the time they arrived, local residents had already extinguished the fire. No damage or loss was reported in the incident, said the media release.
