Dhaka city councillor Manju arrested
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Dhaka South City Corporation's (DSCC) Ward No 39 Councillor Moynul Haque Manju from his office at capital's Tikatuli area today.
"We raided Manju's office after some businessmen lodged complaint yesterday against Manju for allegations of extortion," said Additional Police Superintendent ABM Foyzul Islam.
"There are several other allegations against Manju including landing grabbing, illegal drug business and gambling. We kept him under surveillance for a long time," Foyzul Islam added.
Two firearms, illegal liquor were seized from the office during the raid.
Meanwhile, traders of Rajdhani Super Market celebrated the arrest of Manju by distributing sweets and bringing out a procession in the area.
Aktar Hossain, one of the traders of the market, said: "Manju was a self-declared president of the owners' association of the market. We have to pay him Tk2 to 5 lakh extortion for renting or selling any shop here."
"Manju took Tk5 crore from the traders few days back promising to install air conditioner in the market. However, he has not installed any AC yet. We were disturbed due to his various misdeeds," he added.
After the arrest, the elite force took Manju to his house to conduct another raid there.
