Three additional SPs arrested within hours of home ministry’s approval

The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested three additional superintendents of police just hours after getting approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs to apprehend them on Thursday (17 October).
The arrestees are Additional SPs Shahen Shah (promoted), Jewel Rana (promoted), and Md Rafiqul Islam, according to DB's Joint Commissioner Robiul Hasan Bhuiya.
They have been arrested in cases filed over attacks on students during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, also known as the Monsoon Movement, Robiul told the media on Friday (18 October).
"As they are serving officials, we needed the permission of the Ministry of Home Affairs to arrest them," he said.
Earlier on Thursday, the home ministry gave permission for law enforcers to arrest four additional SPs, including the said three.
Another, Additional SP (promoted) Hasan Arafat, who is also on the list is yet to be arrested.
On Thursday, citing a source from the DB, The Business Standard reported that Shaheen Shah has been in DB custody since 16 October.
Shaheen Shah Masud and Hasan Arafat served the DB for a long time.
Jewel Rana was working in the Diplomatic Security Division, and Rafiqul Islam was working in the Gulshan Division of DMP.
Earlier, the home ministry gave permission to arrest 26 other police officers in three phases.
