Ctg City Corporation sacks engineer Jhulan
Students had demanded the resignation of Jhulan, alleging that he turned off street lights in the city during student protests
The government has removed Chattogram City Corporation engineer Jhulan Kumar Das from his post.
An office order, signed by Chattogram Mayor Shahadat Hossain, was issued in this regard today (15 December), two city corporation officials confirmed to The Business Standard.
Jhulan could not be reached for a comment on the matter.
Earlier on 13 August, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement surrounded the city corporation office demanding the resignation of Jhulan, alleging that he turned off street lights in the city during student protests.
In view of their demands, the city corporation temporarily suspended Jhulan and formed a three-member committee to investigate the allegations. The officer was later transferred to Rangpur City Corporation on 26 September.
According to the investigation committee's report submitted on 15 October, the Bangladesh Power Development Board confirmed that there was electricity when the street lights were turned off. However, the committee could not find evidence that Jhulan had ordered the lights to be turned off.
There are also other allegations against Jhulan. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) found the truth of the allegations of irregularities in the appointment of contractors for the Tk48 crore LED lighting installation project of the city corporation.
In addition, there were allegations of various frauds and irregularities against him in awarding the work of the Tk261 crore automated LED lighting installation project to a blacklisted contractor.
