'Decision on Khaleda's parole after reviewing her health condition and plea'

The decision on the extending BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's parole will be taken after reviewing her health condition and the family's appeal plea, said Law Minister Anisul Haque.

"The government has released Khaleda Zia for six months on humanitarian grounds as per the Criminal Procedure Code, not on bail," the minister said while talking to reporters after the cabinet meeting at the secretariat on Monday.

"We have been informed about the plea sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs," he said, adding, "The application is yet to reach the Law Ministry."  

Khaleda Zia's family members have appealed for the extension of parole period concerning the purpose of her medical treatment at home and abroad. The family submitted an application to the Home Ministry in this regard signed by Khaleda's younger brother Shamim Iskander on August 25.

On March 25, Khaleda was released from jail for six months upon an executive order considering her age and humanitarian grounds.

The government passed the executive order for her release on two conditions -- receiving treatment staying at her Gulshan residence and not leaving the country.

The BNP chief landed in jail on February 8, 2018, for the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

Later on October 30 that year, the High Court extended her punishment to 10 years after dismissing her appeal.

Meanwhile, in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case, Khaleda Zia was sentenced to seven years as special court convicted her on October 27 last year.

Khaleda Zia has at least 36 cases ongoing against her including the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption Case and Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
