Derailment snaps Dhaka’s rail link with Chattogram
The bogies derailed at around 10:45 am on Tuesday
Three carriages of a freight train have derailed at Tongi in Gazipur, disrupting rail communication between Dhaka and Chattogram.
The bogies derailed at around 10:45 am on Tuesday, said the station master of the Tongi Railway Station, Abdur Rakib.
"The Dhaka-bound freight train from Chattogram derailed when it reached the Tongi area. As a result, the railway communication between Dhaka and Chattogram has been cut off. No casualties were reported in the incident.", he said.
The station master further said that the higher authorities have been informed.
A salvage train went to the spot at 1:30pm and working to restore the rail communications.
The derailment disrupted train schedule and wreaked havoc on hundreds of commuters on the route.
Dhaka Divisional Railway Manager, Sadikur Rahman, said a five-member probe body has been formed over the matter.
The probe body will submit its report within three working days, he said, adding that "Hopefully the rail communication will resume by 5 pm this afternoon."
