Dhaka Addl SP Abdullahil Kafi not detained, taken to DB office for quizzing: Police
A source from the DB, however, told TBS that a case is being prepared against Abdullahil Kafi
Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullahil Kafi was not detained at the Dhaka Airport but rather taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office for questioning, DB Joint Commissioner Aminul Islam said today (3 September).
He also said the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is working to find out his involvement in killing and burning students in Ashulia on 5 August.
A source from the DB, however, told TBS that a case is being prepared against Abdullahil Kafi.
"He has not yet been dismissed from his job, which is causing some delay [in filing the case]," the source said.
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Kafi for questioning at around 10pm last night (2 September) after being tipped off that he was trying to flee the country.
"[Kafi] He would not be arrested [as of yet] but rather brought to DB for interrogation as to what extent he was or wasn't involved in the [Ashulia] incident. A police officer cannot be arrested just like that," said DB Joint Commissioner Rabiul Islam.
According to DB sources, Kafi had ordered the policemen on the ground to use excessive power to quell the student protests on 5 August, the day that violence erupted across the country upon the ouster of the Awami League government.
The video circulating on social media showing police loading bodies of gunshot victims onto a rickshaw van and covering them with a discarded banner and a bedsheet was taken near Ashulia Police Station in Dhaka on 5 August, shortly after Sheikh Hasina's departure.
Police sources confirmed the date and location of the video after analysing Google geolocation data and nearby images.
