DoE continues crackdown: Mir Bricks fined Tk2 lakh for cutting hill in Ctg
The crackdown against illegal hill cutting in Chattogram continued for the second day today (4 September) as a mobile court of the Department of Environment (DoE) fined Mir Bricks Industry Tk2 lakh for illegal hill cutting in the Bhatiary area of Sitakunda Upazila.
A worker of Mir Bricks named Majnu Khandkar was caught red-handed at the scene and sentenced to three days of imprisonment without labour by the mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Kazi Tamjid Ahmed, said a press release.
At the same time, Mir Bricks was Tk2 lakh.
In another operation, Salma Khanam was fined Tk20,000 for unauthorized road and guard wall construction in the Mirpur Residential Area of Jangal Latifpur.
The drive also included public awareness efforts, with announcement in loudspeakers and signboards installed to educate the community about the dangers of hill cutting.
Earlier on Tuesday, in an operation led by Dr Fahmida Khanam, additional secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, authorities launched a crackdown against illegal hill cutting at various sites under the jurisdiction of Akbar Shah Police Station in Chattogram city.
