DRU condemns murder case filed against 25 journalists
In a statement released today (13 September), the DRU executive committee, represented by Vice President Shafiqul Islam Shamim and General Secretary Mahi Uddin, demanded the immediate withdrawal of these charges.
The Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has strongly condemned the filing of murder cases against 25 journalists, including its president, Syed Shukkur Ali Shuvo.
In a statement released today (13 September), the DRU executive committee, represented by Vice President Shafiqul Islam Shamim and General Secretary Mahi Uddin, demanded the immediate withdrawal of these charges.
Expressing deep concern, the DRU warned that such actions could undermine press freedom in the country. The organisation vowed to initiate a broader movement to protect journalistic integrity if the practice of filing indiscriminate cases against journalists continues.
While acknowledging the importance of investigating legitimate allegations, the DRU urged authorities to avoid targeting journalists with baseless charges aimed at silencing the press.
The case in question was filed on 11 September at the Bhasantek police station in Dhaka, accusing 25 journalists of murder.
