Four students of Dhaka University are observing a hunger strike in front of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus demanding justice for a second-year student of the university, who was raped in the city's Kurmitola area on Sunday night.
They vowed to continue their programme until their four-point charter of demands are met.
The protesters have demanded immediate arrest of the rapist.
The three other demands placed by the protesting students are the university authorities have to play a guardianship role to ensure proper justice, the government must take measures to create a social movement against rape, and highest punishment must be ensured for the rapist through speedy tribunal.
Sifatul Islam, a student of philosophy department started the hunger strike in the wee hours of Monday.
Three more students joined him later on. Among them, Saiful Islam Rasel from soil, water and environment department, Mostafizur Rahman from information technology institute joined Sifatul Islam later on Monday, while another named Abdur Rahman joined the protest on Tuesday.
Sifatul Islam said, "It is very tough to observe hunger strike under an open sky amid such a cold wave. But we are determined to continue the programme until our demands are met."
"Our demands are logical and they are equally important for an ideal society. Otherwise, the society will turn into a disastrous one. We want to ensure a safe environment for our sisters," he said.
