Starting on 20 January, the EC began a voter information update drive targeting eligible voters born on or before 1 January 2008
The Election Commission has initiated efforts to update voter information for individuals injured during the July uprising and currently undergoing treatment in hospitals.
Alongside biometrics, they are also being provided with the opportunity to correct or replace their national identity cards (NIDs). The updated cards will be delivered within one and a half weeks.
This morning (21 January), a special EC team visited the cabin block of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical College Hospital (BSMMU) to collect voter information and biometrics from patients affected by the uprising.
Shariful Alam, the commission's public relations officer, told The Business Standard that biometrics are being collected from 9am to 5pm today to update the information of individuals still under treatment at BSMMU due to the July uprising.
"Assistance is also being provided to correct errors or replace lost NIDs for students and others previously registered as voters," he added.
This initiative has already been extended to two other hospitals, with plans to visit Dhaka Medical College tomorrow. The commission aims to offer this service nationwide in phases to ensure that all individuals affected by the July events can update their voter information.
In parallel, the EC began its door-to-door voter information update yesterday, targeting eligible voters, including men, women, and transgender individuals, born on or before 1 January 2008.
This effort, which will continue until 3 February, also includes removing deceased voters, correcting exclusions, and updating records for those who have changed residence.
These steps are part of the EC's broader initiative to ensure an accurate and inclusive voter list ahead of upcoming elections.
