This EC won't make intentional mistakes: CEC
“The EC is committed to holding a proper, transparent and impartial election and giving back the right to vote to the 18 crore people of the country,” says AMM Nasir Uddin
The Election Commission (EC) will not make any mistakes willingly while carrying out its responsibilities, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today (5 January).
"There is no opportunity to work conventionally. The EC is committed to holding a proper, transparent and impartial election and giving back the right to vote to the 18 crore people of the country. Election officials will have to work with professionalism.
"I am promising that the commission will not make any intentional mistake while working," the CEC said while inaugurating a training programme for the supervisors and data collectors on the occasion of the voter list updating programme at the Electoral Training Institute in the capital.
"We want to remove the fact that they(people) have been deprived of the voting right for so long. We want to remove the pain of their deprivation. We are steadfast in our commitment," he said.
The CEC said they are here to hear the 18 crore people who have been suffering from the deprivation of voting rights. "We've taken the responsibility so that we can remove their deprivation," he said.
Addressing the programme, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said, "Election officials will have to work with transparency and responsibility to bring people's trust back to voting. The commission considers an error-free voter list a prerequisite to proper voting."
Masud also directed election officials to work with the highest caution while updating the voter list.
Tahmida Ahmad, another election Commissioner, said, "Laws and conscience will be EC's tools in arranging a fair election. The commission will not take responsibility if any EC official commits any misdeed."
Assuring that the EC will do everything to reclaim the tarnished image of elections, Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker said the EC will not tolerate any irregularities, carelessness or vagueness while updating the voter list.
Warning EC officials to refrain from lining their pockets while carrying out election-related works, Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah said, "The EC officials will have to work equally regarding dead, fake, and new voters. I think the EC will be able to renew people's interest in elections."
"People want to vote now. We will make sure that no one can foil the election," he added.
The countrywide door-to-door data collection of the possible voters and dead voters will start on January 20 next.
