The government has appointed Professor Fouzia as the new principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College.
The reputed educational institution has finally got a new head almost after a decade through the appointment of Professor Fouzia by the Education Ministry as an officer on special duty.
The ministry issued the order in this regard on Sunday.
Fouzia, a former principal at the Sobujbagh Government Higher Secondary School, is a Bangladesh Civil Service cadre.
She told The Business Standard that she had heard the news of the appointment. "I will try my level best to restore the image of the reputed institution," she added.
Appointing government officials in a non-government institution is rare, but the sources at the Ministry of Education said, the decision was taken with the aim to save one of the old institutions of the country. Viqarunnisa started its journey in 1952.
The managing committee of the Viqarunnisa Noon School and College appointed Hosne Ara Begum as principal in June 2010. Porimol Joydhor, a teacher of the institution, was convicted in a rape case; subsequently and in consequence of the rape incident, Hosne Ara was ultimately removed.
Later, Nazneen Ferdous was appointed as acting principal. But she was also removed in 2018 over the death of Aritry Adhikary, a student of the school.
The school governing committee, subsequently, appointed Hasina Begum, assistant professor at the school, as the acting principal.
