Professor M Tamim joins Independent University, Bangladesh as Vice Chancellor
Professor M Tamim, a distinguished petroleum and mineral resources engineering professor, joined the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) as the Vice Chancellor on December 23, 2024.
According to a circular from the Ministry of Education dated December 17, 2024, the Hon'ble President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of Universities appointed Prof. Tamim as the Vice Chancellor of IUB for a four-year term.
Before joining IUB, he was a Professor of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Prof. Tamim earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from BUET, completed his master's degree at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Madras), and obtained his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada.
Professor Tamim's research interests span reservoir engineering, energy economics, regulation and planning, development and application of numerical and analytical computer models, and reservoir management. He has also worked extensively on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, energy efficiency improvements, and energy-related environmental solutions. Over his career, he has supervised numerous M.Sc. students and published extensively in national and international journals.
Since 1995, Professor Tamim has held various energy policy formulation, planning, and regulation positions under successive governments. In 2008, he took a one-year leave from academia to manage the Power and Energy Ministry during the caretaker government's tenure. He also briefly served as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of BRAC University from 2019 to 2020.
Professor Tamim is a member and the founding Chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Bangladesh Section, and a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).
