Shah Mokhdum Medical College staffers beat up 10 students
The students went to the college dormitory to bring their winter clothing this evening
At least 10 students of Rajshahi's Shah Mokhdum Medical College have been assaulted allegedly by some staffers of the college when the students went there to bring their winter clothing on Friday evening.
Sirajum Munir, officer-in-charge of Chandrima Police Station, confirmed the information to The Business Standard.
When the students went to the college dormitory to collect their winter clothing, some college staff obstructed them which led to an altercation.
At one stage, they beat up the students and forcefully made them leave the place, the OC said, adding that at least 10 students received injuries in the attack.
Now they are being treated at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, he mentioned.
One of the injured students alleged that Titu and Mithu – two brothers of the college's managing director Moniruzzaman Swadhin – along with some accomplices carried out the attack.
They have lodged a complaint with the local police station over the incident.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in a letter on 2 November, ordered the closure of the medical college as it was running with no formal approval from Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC).
The students of the college appreciated the BMDC decision and demanded that they be transferred to another medical college as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the college authority requested the health ministry to review its order. Responding to the application, a team from the ministry is due to visit the college on Saturday.
Few hours before the scheduled visit, the incident of assault took place.
When contacted, Moniruzzaman Swadhin, the managing director, claimed that the incident is a plot to foil the scheduled visit, so that the college doesn't get formal approval.
