UGC recommends removal of Gopalganj university VC
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended immediate removal of Professor Khondoker Nasiruddin from vice chancellor post at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University after finding irregularities against him.
UGC submitted a probe report in this regard to the Education Ministry, said sources.
Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum UGC, member of UGC and also probe committee, confirmed the matter about report submission on Sunday afternoon.
The UGC also recommended taking legal action against the VC.
On September 24, the Education Ministry asked the UGC to form a probe committee to investigate several allegations brought against the VC.
The UGC responded the ministry's order forming a five-member committee the following day.
The committee, led by Professor Dr Md Alamgir, consists of UGC members Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum and Professor Dr Sazzad Hossain, UGC Director (Public University Management Division) Md Kamal Uddin and Deputy Director Mauli Azad.
They visited the university on September 25 and 26, and talked with the VC, agitating students, teachers and officials of the university.
The team found evidence of irregularities and corruption against the VC.
Earlier, VC Nasiruddin suspended six students over Facebook post on September 7. The VC faced huge criticism on social media and protest spread in several public universities following the suspension.
Since then the students have been staging demonstration on the campus demanding removal of the VC.
At least 50 agitating students were injured on September 20 in an attack by some outsider goons, who were allegedly hired by the VC.
Meanwhile, the VC on Thursday last arranged a press conference where he used abusive words at the protesting students saying that the students are doing unsocial activities in the name of movement.
Protesting the comment, the students brought out a broom procession on the campus on September 25.
The students are still on the street with their demand of VC's resignation.
Besides, the VC reportedly appointed and promoted a number of teachers violating the rules of the university.
There's also an allegation against the VC of sexually harassing a woman, who claimed last year that VC was the father of her son.
The VC allegedly convinced her by giving her a job in the university.
