No power, gas for factories outside industrial zones

The government will not provide further gas and electricity connections to factories built outside planned industrial zones, said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu.
“Those who have established their facilities outside the specialised zones will get a chance to relocate,” he said.
Businessmen who are planning to build industrial sites, or those who have already done it, will have to rethink their approaches in accordance with the new decision, Bipu told the press on Monday.

He was briefing the journalists after a meeting with the deputy commissioners in DC Conference in the capital.
According to the state minister, planned industrial area means economic zones built by the government, and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) plots.
“The prime minister directed the DCs yesterday that unplanned industries will not be allowed. We today told them that new connections of utility services will be provided only to the planned industrial areas. This is for sure,” he added.
The total electricity dues of government offices stand more than Tk1,400 crore, Bipu said, adding: “The dues against gas bills are also huge. The total dues for gas and electricity connections might be around Tk8,000-9,000 crore.”
He further stated that the government will draft a policy for land acquisition to set up electricity pillars.
