Time extended, no fines for delayed electricity bill payment
Household consumers have until July 31 to pay bills from February to June
Household consumers will be able to pay their delayed electricity bills for the months of February to June by July 31 without fines, said Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
The commission issued an order on Thursday directing six power distribution companies to uphold the decision.
Earlier, household electricity consumers were allowed to pay their delayed bills of February, March and April till June 30 to contain the novel coronavirus outbreak.
However, many consumers received inflated bills and refrained from paying those within their due times hoping that those would be corrected by the bill-issuing authorities. However, the authorities have not taken enough steps to correct those inflated bills yet.
A probe committee found that over 61,265 inflated bills were issued by the power distribution companies.
The Power Division has also identified 290 staff and officers involved in sending out excessive bills to consumers and recommended departmental action against them after further investigation.
