No respite from heat wave this month: BMD 

The ongoing heatwave across the country will continue throughout this month as there is no chance of rain for now, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

However, the temperature of the country may decrease or increase slightly in some areas.

"The ongoing heat wave in the country is unlikely to abate unless there is a nor'wester. Weather models do not suggest any possibilities of rainfall for this month," AKM Nazmul Haque, a meteorologist of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, told The Business Standard.

"Temperatures may drop slightly in early May, and rain is likely to follow," he said.

The BMD meteorologist further said in the next 2-3 days, the temperature in some areas may drop up to 1 degree. As of now, the current temperature trend may continue for the next 2-3 days.

On Wednesday, Mongla recorded the highest temperature of the day at 41.6 degrees Celsius, BMD data shows. Among other districts, Chuadanga, Jashore, and Pabna recorded the highest temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius, while Dhaka's highest temperature was recorded at 39.2 degrees Celsius. 

However, the Met office, in its 24-hour forecast commencing yesterday evening said rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at one or two places over Sylhet division with hails at isolated places. 

3 farmers die of heatstroke 

Two farmers died from suspected heatstroke in separate upazilas of Nilphamari yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Anarul Ahmen, 52, and Abu Taleb, 54.

In Domar Upazila, Anarul fell ill while working on a field under the open sky around 1:30pm. Later, locals rescued him and took him to the Domar Health Upazila Complex, where a doctor declared him dead.

Domar police station Officer-in-Charge Mohsin Ali confirmed the matter.

In Dimla upazila, Abu Taleb felt sick while working on farmland. Later, locals took him to the health complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Besides, another farmer, Shamshul Alam, 60, died of heatstroke in Chattogram's Lohagara upazila.  

Chuadanga records 1.6mm rain after days of scorching heat

After days of scorching heat, rain has brought a splash of relief for the residents of Chuadanga, the district witnessing the highest temperatures this season.

According to the Met Office in Chuadanga, 1.6mm of rainfall was recorded after it began drizzling around 1:10am on Wednesday.

Chuadanga has been grappling with severe to very severe heatwaves for several consecutive days, with the highest temperature of the season, reaching 42.4°C, recorded there.
