World Environment Day: Bonayan starts distributing 5 million sapling
As the impact of climate change becomes more severe day by day, the significance of World Environment Day becomes more prominent with Bangladesh trying to play its part in ensuring a better future
'Bonayan', the largest private sector-driven afforestation program in Bangladesh, has started distributing 5 million saplings this year in celebration of golden jubilee of independence of Bangladesh.
This initiative will directly complement Bangladesh Government's SDG targets of #13 (Climate Action) and #15 (Life on Land), read a press release on Friday.

In recent years, 'Bonayan' has distributed over 5 million saplings across the country. Even during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, 'Bonayan' distributed 5 million saplings abiding by all the safety protocols.
At present, the project is operating in more than 18 districts across the country, including Dhaka, Mymensingh, Manikganj, Tangail, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Lalmonirhat, Natore, Kushtia, Jhenaidah, Meherpur, Jessore, Chittagong, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Cox's Bazar, Rangamati and Noakhali (Bhasanchar).
Under this project, Bonayan has distributed 110 million saplings of medicinal, fruit and timber varieties across the country, benefitting 30 thousand beneficiaries each year across the country.
Bonayan has already received numerous accolades and awards at home and abroad for its contribution to the expansion of greenery and combatting the impact of climate change through afforestation programs. Of these, four times the Prime Minister's National Award and once the Chief Adviser's National Award are particularly noteworthy.
'Bonayan' also received the 'Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award' on Green Leadership from 'Enterprise Asia' and 'Bangladesh Innovation Award 2021' in SDG inclusion category. It is also worth noting that each year, 'Bonayan' receives over 20 awards from the district and upazilla levels.
Bonayan is proud to work with a number of government and private organizations such as Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner-RRRC, Rajshahi City Corporation, Border Guard Bangladesh-BGB, Bangladesh Agricultural University to drive afforestation and conserve biodiversity. 'Bonayan' is committed to continue its journey to restore the ecosystem and ensure a Greener Bangladesh.
'Bonayan' started its journey in 1980 to combat the adverse effects of climate change and to promote afforestation. The project has stepped into its glorious 41st year in 2021 at a steadfast pace.
