Ex-Rajshahi mayor among 50 named in lawsuit over killing of college student
As per the case document, the college student was shot in the head when some AL men attacked the protesters in Rajshahi on 5 August with firearms and died on 8 August while undergoing treatment at RMCH
A murder case has been filed over the killing of Rayhan Ali, an Islami Chhatra Shibir leader of Rajshahi College, against former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, General Secretary of Rajshahi Awami League (AL) Dablu Sarkar and 48 others.
Another 1000-1200 unnamed have been accused in the murder case.
Rana Islam, the younger brother of Rayhan, filed the case with the Boalia Model Police Station last night (19 August), the Officer in Charge of the station, SM Masud Parvez, confirmed the matter, saying the case has been accepted and recorded.
According to the case documents, AL activists attacked the anti-discrimination student protesters on 5 August afternoon in front of the city's Swocho Tower under the direction of former mayor Liton and AL general secretary Sarkar.
During this, they opened fire at the students and threw cocktails "with the intent to kill," causing them to scatter in disarray.
At that time, under the leadership of Mayor Liton and Dablu Sarkar, some AL men, including Rubel, Rajib, Roni, and Mostafa, were seen shooting at the students, the case document reads.
The complainant claimed several students, including Maruf Mortuza, Ibrahim Ali, Maruf Al Hasan, and Mehedi Hasan, were shot. While attempting to rescue the injured, Rayhan Ali was shot in the head by the third accused, Jahirul Haq Rubel, who had a revolver, as per the case document.
It says Rayhan was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with the help of locals, where he died on 8 August while undergoing treatment.
The complainant has demanded exemplary punishment for the accused in the case.
