Family objects to exhumation of Yamin's body, prompting officials to turn away
There is ample evidence, including video footage and photographs of his killing, to ensure justice. That is why I have submitted a written request to the authorities on behalf of the family, Yamin's uncle says
Family members of Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin, who was shot dead by police during the student movement on 18 July 2024, have refused to exhume his body prompting officials to suspend the procedure ordered by the court.
Earlier this morning (4 February), a team led by Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Dhaka district administration, Md Ali Hasan, along with local police, visited the Bank Town area in Savar and identified Yamin's grave with the help of his uncle and plaintiff in the case, Md Abdullah Al Munkadir.
However, when the officials later reached out to the family to proceed with the exhumation, they refused to allow it.
The family members also submitted a written application expressing their unwillingness to exhume Yamin's body, citing his "martyr status".
Later, the officials returned without exhuming the body.
Speaking to the media, the executive magistrate stated that the exhumation was planned to conduct an inquest report - that investigates a suspicious or unnatural death - as per court instructions.
"However, Yamin's family objected, saying that Yamin had been buried with the status of a martyr. They formally submitted a written application against the exhumation."
Ali Hasan further said, "The exhumation has been suspended, and the matter will be reported to the court. The next course of action will be decided based on the court's order."
Yamin's uncle told The Business Standard that Yamin's parents didn't want his body to be exhumed.
"There is ample evidence, including video footage and photographs of his killing, to ensure justice. That is why I have submitted a written request to the authorities on behalf of the family."
On 18 July 2024, Yamin, a fourth-year student of computer science and engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), was shot dead by police during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the Savar Bus Stand area.
Following the incident, his uncle filed separate cases with a court and the International Crimes Tribunal.
